Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has praised Liam Cooper.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa gushed with praise about Liam Cooper at his pre-game press conference yesterday.

Bielsa praised Cooper professionalism, telling the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I can tell you what I am impressed about. You can’t find a better professional than him. He feels love for his profession apart from the fact it is his job.

“He is generous and prioritises the needs of his team-mates before his own needs.”

From a highly regarded manager like Bielsa who has been in management for more than two decades that is strong praise.

But Bielsa’s words arguably don’t even go far enough.

Bielsa is praising Cooper’s attitude and commitment. What really deserves recognition is his form.

For the last two seasons, Cooper has been barracked by fans for sloppy performances, and it was deserved.

Under Garry Monk he was a clear third choice and struggled to raise his game when called upon.

Last season he was given more first team chances, but ruined it with errors and ill discipline.

This year under Bielsa he has been a player transformed.

The Argentine boss is likely reluctant to want to take credit, such is his character, and is focusing on Cooper’s approach and professionalism as a key factor.

In truth it’s a bit of both, Bielsa and Cooper deserve tremendous praise.

There is still a lot of work to do for Leeds, and Cooper must keep up his high level of performance.
