Leeds United won the Champions League of brief and blunt exit statements today.
The Elland Road side revealed that Jean-Kevin Augustin had left the club after electing against extending his loan contract.
And here’s what appeared on United’s official website: “Leeds United can confirm the club will not be extending the loan of Jean-Kevin Augustin beyond 30th June 2020.”
And with that, Augustin is no more.
The French striker managed only 48 minutes in his half-season loan in West Yorkshire but, with the Leipzig marksman leaving, that might open the door for Marcelo Bielsa to recall a forgotten figure.
Ryan Edmondson hasn’t made a senior appearance for the Whites since September of 2018, almost two years ago.
But with Augustin gone, Bielsa now only has Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts as centre-forward options – really, it’s just Bamford given that Roberts is more or less a number 10 these days.
And given that the Leeds boss is now allowed to name nine substitutes, it’s definitely possible that the Argentine will bring Edmondson back into the senior set-up.
Edmondson is only 19 and although Bielsa clearly wasn’t overly impressed by his last adventure in the first team – a 2-1 league defeat by Birmingham City – time is still very much on his side.
With Bamford a tad inconsistent, and Roberts operating as an attacking midfielder, there is a window for Edmondson to come in as Augustin’s replacement.
Whether Bielsa takes up the chance, however, is another thing entirely.
