
Southampton fans on Twitter were unhappy that Patrick Bamford’s opening goal for Leeds United yesterday wasn’t ruled out for offside.
It’s the week where small sections of supporters return to Premier League grounds, with several thousand Saints supporters watching Leeds record a 2-0 win at St Mary’s.
Bamford was the one who opened the scoring for Leeds, and in truth, he should have also had a penalty.
But as the Englishman was seen mouthing to the referee – ‘Do I have to dive?’ – as he made reference to not earning the spot-kick, he himself would have felt hard done by nevermind the Saints fans.
Nonetheless, whilst that annoyed Leeds’ 16-goal hitman, some Southampton fans controversially thought he was just offside when the goal hit the back of the net in the 73rd minute.
Leeds have had some tight VAR calls go against them this season, as have the saints, in actual fact the rest of the Premier League, but it does seem as though the right call was made here even though some Southampton fans are questioning the call.
Either way, whilst on paper this was a dead-rubber encounter, because both teams are safe, Leeds did secure a top ten finish with those three points yesterday.
It has been some return for those in Yorkshire, and whilst Southampton themselves tailed off as the season wore on, both may well be battling for the same places near the European places next season.
