Ladbrokes have priced Newcastle United as 4/1 to sign Bournemouth striker Benik Afobe.

Odds are Newcastle will sign a centre-forward in January after Joselu, Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic have struggled to be prolific Premier League hitmen for the Magpies this season.

Between them, the trio have only managed seven goals all season, though Mitrovic, who has one of those, has only been given 89 minutes of Premier League football by Rafael Benitez.

Nevertheless, Benitez will surely be in the market for a new marksman and Ladbrokes price them as 4/1 to sign the former Arsenal youth.

Afobe has failed to score in any of his 12 top-flight appearances this season, having only managed six in 31 games for the Cherries last season.

That being said, he might well have a better support cast at Newcastle, with the likes of Mikel Merino and Christian Atsu feeding him, but it’s speculative.

If United’s £300 million takeover goes through then maybe, just maybe, they should set their sights higher than Afobe.

Benitez’s side have lost seven of their last eight Premier League games and, despite an encouraging start, they are most certainly in a relegation battle. Is Afobe good enough to help them win that battle? It’s debatable.

Afobe is worth around £9 million according to Transfermarkt.
