Patrick Bamford of Leeds United has been told that he’s ‘very unlucky’ to not be in the England squad because he is ‘better than’ Aston Villa hitman Ollie Watkins.
That’s the view of former Aston Villa man Warren Aspinall, who has told BBC Radio Sussex that Watkins isn’t as complete a striker as the Leeds star.
He said: “You can see his movement is different class and I think he is very unlucky not to be in the England squad. I think he is better than the lad at Aston Villa if I am really honest. With his goals for as well, he is even-stevens with Watkins.”
With 14, Bamford actually has two more Premier League goals than the Villa marksman this season.
But England boss Gareth Southgate clearly rates Watkins a little higher.
That’s because Southgate overlooked the Leeds attacker’s form and called Watkins into his Three Lions squad for the most recent international break last month.
It would appear as if the former Middlesbrough striker – a £10 million signing by the Elland Road club in 2018 – is also behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the race to get a spot in the Euro 2020 squad.
But Leeds still have five games left before the Premier League season finishes and if Bamford can enjoy a strong end to the campaign, it’ll be hard to leave him out.
