Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn was the hero for his country last night.

The Netherlands edged out Poland 1-0 in a Nations League clash which was decided by a goal from the Spurs attacker.

Bergwijn, a £25 million signing by Tottenham in January, pounced on 61 minutes, tapping into an empty net following good work from Hans Hateboer.

The Dutchman has shown glimpses of his quality since arriving in North London earlier this year – including by scoring a pearler on his debut against Manchester City – and it looks like he has a lot more fans than those who exclusively support the Lilywhites.

Here’s how neutral supporters reacted to his goal on Twitter:

This could be a big, big season for the former PSV Eindhoven star.

Normally it can take between six months to a year to adapt to Premier League football, but the fact that Bergwijn was pretty much an instant hit should make Tottenham fans very excited about what he could do in his first full season.

Jose Mourinho gets a bad rap about his man-management – or lack thereof at times – but he is an excellent coach and one who could take the 22-year-old to a new level.
