Goal have released the latest Goal50 rankings, and Liverpool were amongst the most well-represented clubs in this year’s list.

The Reds came incredibly close to a historic quadruple earlier this year, and many of the Merseyside club’s star players enjoyed the best years of their career.

Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz and Fabinho all earned spots lower down the list, but there was one player from Liverpool who broke into the top 10.

There are no prizes for guessing which player we’re talking about, it’s Mohamed Salah.

Salah was ranked as ninth in this year’s Goal50, and perhaps the most interesting thing about this ranking is the comparison to Sadio Mane.

The Senegalese attacker was 10th in the list, just one place behind his long-term friend and rival, Salah.

It’s incredibly tough to separate these two this year, but, for our money, Mane has to be ranked higher.

Yes, Salah won the Golden Boot and the Playmaker award in the Premier League, but a number of those goals were scored towards the back end of 2021, while Mane contiuously showed up in the biggest games for Liverpool as well as winning the African Cup of Nations with his country.

These two have always been almost impossible to separate, but Salah got the slight nod here.

Sadly, the days of Salah and Mane being the most fearsome double-act in Europe are over after Mane left Anfield for Bayern Munich where he has continued his fine form.

Salah hasn’t had the best of starts to the 2022/23 season, but he’ll be hoping to kick on in the new year in order to top this list in 12 months’ time.
