Clinton Morrison suggested on BBC Radio 5 Live (7:29pm, October 19, 2020) that Arsenal made a mistake selling Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

The former Crystal Palace forward, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, believes that Martinez is a better goalkeeper than current Arsenal number one Bernd Leno.

As reported by The Guardian, Villa paid Premier League rivals Arsenal £20 million in transfer fees to secure the services of the Argentine goalkeeper in September.

Morrison said on BBC Radio 5 Live (7:29pm, October 19, 2020): “I know Arsenal had Leno, but I felt Martinez is a better goalkeeper than Leno.

“That’s just my opinion. I think it’s good business for Aston Villa. Yeah, he has been brilliant for them.”

Emiliano Martinez needed to move

Martinez played well in the final weeks of last season for Arsenal when Leno was injured.

The Argentine played his role in the Gunners winning the FA Cup and showed that he is good enough to be the number one custodian for a top club in the Premier League.

However, Leno has been the first choice at the North London club for a while, and it was always unlikely that manager Mikel Arteta was going to drop him to the substitutes’ bench once he recovered full fitness.

Martinez is doing well for the Villans at the moment, with his calm and assured approach to the game playing a role in Dean Smith’s side winning all four of the Premier League games so far this season.
