Liverpool and Sunderland supporters are among those who have been recognised by HITC Sport readers, alongside Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Stoke fans.
The results from HITC Sport’s poll looking at the best supported clubs in the Premier League throughout 2016 are in. But did your club’s fans make it into the top five? Here is the countdown…
5. Stoke City
Stoke City’s Lee Grant celebrates
Stoke City supporters often leave the Britannia Stadium rocking – and it is hardly a surprise given the calibre of some of the players on show – but also have the perfect incentive to make their presence known on away trips as the club continues to offer free travel to away games for their supporters.
4. Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough fans have had plenty to celebrate during 2016, having watched their side secure automatic promotion to the Premier League in the first half of the year and put up a strong fight during the early stages of this current campaign.
3. Manchester United
Manchester United’s Juan Mata celebrates scoring against Manchester City
Manchester United have not had that much to shout about in recent years. Louis van Gaal’s tenure offered little excitement and Jose Mourinho’s time in charge is yet to really ignite. 2016 was the year that gave the United fans the chance to celebrate at Wembley however, as they won the FA Cup.
2. Sunderland
Sunderland fans deserve a huge amount of credit for sticking by their team despite their constant reliance on great escapes from relegation in recent years. It was also one of their supporters who stole the hearts of the footballing world in 2016, as Sunderland’s game with Chelsea was used as an opportunity to pay tribute to the incredible bravery of five-year-old fan Bradley Lowery.
1. Liverpool
Liverpool fans
There are few occurrences in football quite as memorable as when Anfield unites to signal the start of a game with their passionate rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, so it is therefore hardly surprising that Liverpool supporters have been voted by HITC Sport’s readers as the best fans of 2016. When the Kop gets behind Jurgen Klopp’s team, it seems almost impossible to prevent the Merseyside club from coming out on top.
And on top is just where supporters might see Liverpool finish with the German’s exciting attacking football catching the eye in the 2016/17 campaign.
