Trent Alexander-Arnold posted an all-action, brilliant display for Liverpool in the win at Old Trafford last night – and a certain Paul Scholes was mightily impressed.
The Reds beat Manchester United 4-2 at the Theatre of Dreams to put themselves right back in contention for the Champions League places.
Consequence of the win, Liverpool moved fifth in the Premier League table and four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and with Jurgen Klopp’s side boasting a game in hand, it’ll be a fascinating last few weeks of the campaign.
A lot of the win was owed to the performance of the English right-back who was faultless all night.
Alexander-Arnold swung in the cross which led to Roberto Firmino heading Liverpool into a 2-1 lead before the break, and his pressing played a huge role in the visitors going 3-1 up early in the second half.
And in defence, the 22-year-old didn’t put a foot wrong in front of a watching Gareth Southgate, who omitted him from his last England squad in March.
He was comfortably Man of the Match and here’s what Scholes said to Optus Sport about Alexander-Arnold: “Trent’s hit a really good ball in. I have to say I thought he was really good on the night. I thought he was the best player on the pitch.”
Considering Scholes is arguably the finest passer of a football to ever grace the Premier League, it’s high praise for him to compliment Alexander-Arnold’s delivery.
But the Liverpool star’s attacking and set-piece skill has never been in question – it’s often the defending which leads to criticism, but he was equally brilliant at both ends of the field against United and what a boost it’ll be for Klopp if he maintains this form over the next three games.
