Clinton Morrison has claimed that Curtis Jones was ‘the best player on the pitch’ after Liverpool thrashed Porto 5-1 in the Champions League, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (28/09/21 at 9:50 pm).

The 20-year-old supplied two assists as Liverpool enjoyed a pretty easy night in Portugal on Tuesday to make it two wins from their opening two matches.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been running riot in front of goal this season and, after only two Champions League matches, they have netted eight.

Liverpool fans haven’t seen their front three at their deadly best for a while now – but all three were on the scoresheet at the Estadio do Dragao, with Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino bagging braces.

But a big reason behind their free-scoring ways is the supply line behind them and Jones was at the heart of it all last night.

Former Crystal Palace striker Morrison made it clear that ‘every time’ he watches the 20-year-old in action, he puts on a performance.

“Curtis Jones has been the best player on the pitch,” said Morrison. “He impresses me every time I see him.

“He makes things happen. He has had three assists in the game. Salah has scored two. Firmino’s scored a brace. And Mane, so all of the front three. The only one that didn’t score is Jota.

“It has been an excellent performance from Liverpool.”

Given that Klopp no longer has to forcefully shuffle his pack and play midfielders at centre-back, then that does help with the balance of the side.

Liverpool, well apart from Salah, did go through a number of dry spells last season, but they are back to their best this time around.

There will be a slight concern that they are still conceding a fair few goals because a certain Manchester City will test them in that department at the weekend.

Whilst the six-time European champions were running riot in Porto’s back garden, the zero-time European Cup winners were losing 2-0 to PSG, with Lionel Messi scoring his first goal for the French club.
