Speaking to ESPN, Paris Maghoma has been waxing-lyrical about his former Tottenham academy teammate, Marcus Edwards.

The winger is set to return to north London on Wednesday evening as Sporting shape up to face Spurs in a crucial Champions League clash.

Edwards ran the show in the reverse fixture, raising many questions about Spurs’ decision to sell him as a teenager, and according to Maghoma, this is a footballer who could go on to challenge for a Ballon d’Or.

Edwards’ improvement

Maghome showered the Sporting star with a lot of praise.

“Marcus probably tried to nutmeg Harry Kane and probably all of them. He probably got a lot of stick about it, but that’s the type of player he is, he plays with so much freedom and so much joy,” Maghoma said.

“It was just a known thing that Marcus is a mini Messi. He just plays like him, the same was Messi is like Maradona, Marcus is like Messi.

“People will be looking at them and saying ‘why did you let him go?’ If it was an attitude problem you could’ve helped him through it, if it was mentality, you could have helped him. He was only 17/18 years of age.”

“I personally believe he could be one of the best players England has ever seen, and that’s me being honest. I get slated for this for calling him the best player ever, but I genuinely think he is the best player ever that I have ever seen.”

“If he keeps going and believing in himself, surrounding himself with the right people, there’s no saying he can’t be nominated for a Ballon d’Or.”

Long way to go

Edwards is showing a lot of talent at the moment, but he still has a long way to go before we start speaking about him as a Ballon d’Or contender.

With all due respect, Edwards needs to return to the Premier League if he’s going to be held in that sort of esteem, but with his reputation only growing over in Portugal, it may not be long before England’s elite come calling.

One thing is for sure, this player has bags of potential and if he fulfills it, Spurs may well look back on letting Edwards go as one of their biggest-ever mistakes.
