The Toffees have had to dig into their pockets to pay-off their former boss.
According to the Daily Mail, Everton have been ordered to pay former boss Roberto Martinez between £10-11 million after sacking him in May.
The Spaniard, who has since taken over as manager of Belgium, was handed a new five-year contract in 2014 – featuring a hefty release clause amid fears that Tottenham Hotspur were interested.
However, after failing to get anywhere near the fifth-placed finish he achieved in his first season on Merseyside in the two proceeding campaigns (11th, both times), Martinez was finally shown the door earlier this year.
Few Evertonians had any issue with their board’s decision back then, although the Daily Mail’s revelation is unlikely to sit well – especially given the 43-year-old’s pay-out was more than double what it cost to prise his replacement, Ronald Koeman, from Southampton – and more than what Everton paid for all but two of their summer signings.
