Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney dazzled in a wing-back role on Sunday night.
The Scotland star was arguably the game’s best player as Steve Clarke’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat by Slovakia.
Tierney has been very impressive for Arsenal since joining in a £25 million move in the summer of 2019, when he has been fit.
But whenever Gunners boss Mikel Arteta plays a three-man defence, the 23-year-old is usually in it as a centre-back.
On Sunday though, Tierney had a bit more license to roam forward in a slightly different role, one which he relished after having his man on toast for most of the game.
And former Hearts boss Craig Levein has told BBC Radio Scotland that it was his best performance at international level, saying briefly: “I think that was Kieran Tierney’s best game in a Scotland shirt.”
It’s certainly food for thought if Arteta was watching the game.
Sometimes Tierney struggles in that centre-back variation of his position, despite originally dazzling there in the summer during Project Restart and in their triumphant FA Cup journey.
And on the back of this performance, maybe a wing-back role is something to consider going forward.
