Best average points per game in 2014: Where do Chelsea rank?

Italian newspaper Il Messaggero has calculated how many points Europe’s top clubs have taken per game over the whole of 2014.

Chelsea are enjoying a strong end to 2014, but things haven’t always been plain sailing in this calendar year, so how do they compare to Europe’s other top clubs over the last 12 months?

Italian newspaper Il Messaggero has printed a league table of Europe’s elite according to the average number of points they have picked up per league game from January 1, 2014 to now.

The stats make interesting reading with Bayern Munich fairly predictably top of the pile with an average of 2.58 points per fixture.

Serie A champions Juventus are second with an impressive 2.56, followed by Spanish giants Real Madrid on 2.36.

The Premier League’s finest only get in at joint fourth with Chelsea and Manchester City both locked together on 2.31 points per game in 2014.

Chelsea’s upcoming Champions League opponents Paris Saint-Germain have only managed 2.22 while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are on 2.11.

However, as a gauge of which team is strongest, this method is very flawed. It may actually be more of a measure of how competitive each league is with Bayern dominating the Bundesliga and Juventus tearing up Serie A without much resistance while the Premier League is more hotly contested.
