Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur are all chasing Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun.
Interest in Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun is hotting up. According to The Sun, scouts from Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur all attended Turkey’s World Cup qualifying double headers against Iceland and Finland recently.
The Standard required that Palace had a bid rejected on deadline day for a striker then valued by Besiktas at £12.5 million. According to The Mail last month, however, the Turkish champions are now demanding £17.5 million after Tosun’s fine performances in the Champions League group stages.
But such a fee should not put off Newcastle and Palace sides who could do with a goalscorer. The Magpies have been forced to rely on the less-than-prolific Joselu while The Eagles, famously, have not scored a goal in their seven Premier League fixtures so far.
And both sides, not to mention Tottenham, could be in luck.
‘We will sell’
“If the proposals are very serious numbers and if we need to sell to benefit the club, we will sell,” Besiktas president Fikret Orman told HaberTurk.
“If the proposals arrive in January, we will sit back and talk.”
Tosun is something of a late bloomer at the age of 26 though his form in the last two seasons has been simply outstanding. The 24-cap Turkish international has scored 41 goals in the previous two campaigns in all competitions, inspiring Besiktas to successive Super Lig titles.
In former Middlesbrough loanee Alvaro Negredo, however, the Istanbul giants already have a ready-made replacement at hand.
The question is, who will win the race for one of Europe’s hottest strikers? Newcastle, Palace, or a Tottenham Hotspur side who are aiming to go deep into the Champions League this season?
