Bent claims Leeds ace who impressed at Anfield got ‘no credit whatsoever’ last season

Darren Bent has claimed that Patrick Bamford got ‘no credit whatsoever’ for his performances last season after his impressive display for Leeds against Liverpool over the weekend.

The former Premier League striker also told talkSPORT (13/09/20 4:25 pm) that he ‘wasn’t impressed’ by Rodrigo’s performance.

Bamford has been seen as a marmite-like figure for his performances in a Leeds shirt, mainly because of the high volume of clear-cut chances he misses, but he punished Virgil van Dijk for his error at Anfield.

Bent shared his thoughts on both Bamford and Rodrigo and stated that Leeds United’s new summer signing ‘couldn’t hold the ball up’ when he came onto the pitch.

“Rodrigo, I wasn’t impressed with him when he came on,” Bent told talkSPORT. “Patrick Bamford, I was so happy for him. I was chatting with him last night. I congratulated him.

“He is someone who has taken a lot of stick. Last season, Leeds were the best team in the Championship, by far, and he was their top goal-scorer yet he got no credit, whatsoever. They were saying ‘get him out of the team’. Gets a goal at Anfield.

“It wasn’t that he [Rodrigo] gave a penalty away because, with striker challenges, it’s expected sometimes – He couldn’t hold the ball up. He wasn’t really moving. At least Bamford was giving them one or two problems.”

It wouldn’t be a surprise, and it would be quite ironic, if Bamford betters his goal tally in the Premier League from his days in the Championship.

Whilst there is still pressure and expectancy on Leeds’ shoulders, it’s different compared to what was expected of them in the second-tier.

In England’s top-flight, they will be more like underdogs and that type of tag suits a Marcelo Bielsa team down to the bone and makes them very dangerous, which will help ease the pressure on a player like Bamford.
