Darren Bent has backed Arsenal to sign Matt Doherty and stated that the Wolves defender has ‘a little bit of everything’ to his game, as he told the Sunday Session on talkSPORT (23/08/20 at 3:40 pm).

The former striker was told on talkSPORT that Arsenal are seemingly keen on Doherty’s services and he stated that he is ‘all for that’ potential transfer.

Doherty has been one of the most underrated players in the Premier League during these two past seasons, as he mainly operates as a right-sides wing-back for Nuno Espirito Santo.

Bent shared that the Irishman typifies the modern-day fullback, as he gave his thumbs up to the boyhood Arsenal fan making the switch to the Emirates if such a situation materialised.

“I like Matt Doherty, I always have done for years and years,” Bent told talkSPORT. “He is like one of those modern-day fullbacks, who has got a little bit of everything.

“He can score goals, he is good on the ball and he gets good crosses in as well. I have always liked him. Even when Wolves, about four or five years ago, weren’t great and they were quite a poor side under Kenny Jackett. He was still their standout performer.

“So, for me, I would be all for that [potential move to Arsenal]. He is a very good player. He has got all the attributes.”

Arsenal’s record transfer deals

  1. Nicolas Pepe

    £72 million

  2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    £56 million

  3. Alexandre Lacazette

    £52 million

  4. Thomas Partey

    45 million

  5. Mesut Ozil

    £42 million

There has been a lot of talk surrounding Arsenal’s defenders this summer, with Mikel Arteta seemingly ready to clear out the mess that has stagnated the club for far too long.

Hector Bellerin’s future is up in the air, as reported by Sky in Germany in July, whilst Ainsley Maitland-Niles is another name who could make a surprise departure this summer [Daily Mail].

If both of those were to leave then that would leave Cedric Soares as the club’s only senior right-back at the club, which would mean that Arteta would need to bring somebody else through the doors.

If Doherty is that guy then he would get a well-balanced player, who is strong with both feet, an underrated crosser of the ball, who picks the ball up in intelligent areas and is pretty calm when defending his own goal.
