Tottenham Hotspur were beaten by Liverpool in their first Champions League final.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto expressed his sadness for Tottenham Hotspur after they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday evening.
This was Spurs’ first ever Champions League final and it ended in a defeat with Mo Salah and substitute Divock Origi scoring the only goals of the game.
During Pochettino’s early reign as Spurs manager, he overlooked and released Assou-Ekotto from his then £40k-a-week contract at White Hart Lane, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Nonetheless, after the match, Assou-Ekotto had this message for his former club, as he posted this message on his personal Twitter account.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side tried to get going in the game but they simply couldn’t muster any clear cut chances as the game in itself lacked any real quality.
Despite having more possession than their opponents, the Spurs players couldn’t feed striker Harry Kane with any chances as the England man struggled to prove his worth.
Before the game, Pochettino decided to drop Lucas Moura, who scored a hat-trick against Ajax in the semi-finals, to the bench with Kane coming into the starting XI.
But Spurs’ main man up top, who had been out of action for a number of weeks, struggled to get going or cause Liverpool’s defence any real problems.
Nonetheless, the North London outfit will be proud of their efforts because given what Pochettino has had to work with this season, he has worked wonders at the club.
Attention will now turn to the Nations League, where Kane will come up against Virgil van Dijk once again, this time when England face the Netherlands.
