Tottenham Hotspur are out of the Champions League.
Monaco’s Thomas Lemar celebrates scoring their second goal
Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated from the Champions League last night after a woeful display away to Monaco.
The makeshift defence was exposed by the Ligue 1 side on numerous occasions and only brilliance from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris kept the scoreline respectable, finishing 2-1.
Spurs needed a draw to stay alive heading into the final home game against CSKA Moscow, but rarely looked like equalising Thomas Lemar’s winner.
Tottenham’s Benoit Assou Ekotto in action
Former Tottenham left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto was among those watching, and celebrated on Twitter as Harry Kane scored an equalising penalty.
The defender showed his passion for the club by reacting with disappointment at the final whistle as Tottenham’s elimination was confirmed.
Former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar also gave his view, commenting after Lemar’s winner, admitting that he simply felt Spurs were not destined to remain in the competition.
A draw would have kept Tottenham alive for one more game, but now their final match against CSKA Moscow is for the very dubious reward of being sent into the Europa League knockout phases, a competition they know well from previous seasons.
