Manchester United are competing with Newcastle in the race to sign German striker Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko is United’s top target for the number nine role, and talks are ongoing over a move for the RB Leipzig forward.
Newcastle have already come in with a bid, but it was turned down. Now Manchester United are trying to convince the Slovenian striker that his future should be at Old Trafford.
The forward was left out of RB Leipzig’s squad for their friendly game at the weekend as speculation about his future continues to build.
Latest on Benjamin Sesko, according to Jan-Aage Fjortoft
Benjamin Sesko, who is 22, has the potential to make a real impact in the Premier League, much like Alexander Isak has done. He is a player United have had their eye on for quite some time, with Christopher Vivell – now leading recruitment at Old Trafford – having brought him to Red Bull Salzburg in the past.
The Premier League season is just two weeks away, and ideally, United would like to get this one wrapped up sooner rather than later.
German football pundit Jan-Aage Fjortoft pointed out that both clubs cannot wait around forever for Sesko to decide.
He said: “There has been talk of the clubs setting a deadline for Sesko’s decision. From the English clubs’ perspective, this makes sense – they need clarity to either move forward or walk away. Both Newcastle and Manchester United have alternative targets and cannot wait indefinitely. I believe a decision must be made in the coming days.”
Fjortoft also mentioned that while Sesko prefers a move to Man United, he wants assurances that they can actually pull off the transfer.
“Newcastle need confirmation that they have a genuine chance to sign him, while Manchester United must demonstrate that they can fund the deal,” he explained on X.
Fjortoft added: “As I’ve said before, Sesko’s first choice is Manchester United. However, he needs to be convinced that the club can actually get the deal done.”

A deal for Sesko is not tied to Rasmus Hojlund leaving the club, as the Danish striker is determined to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place.
Manchester United can afford a significant move for RB Leipzig’s forward, having structured payments for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and also brought in around £20 million through sell-on fees.
The Red Devils are also expecting funds from the likely sale of Antony, with additional savings planned by moving Jadon Sancho’s wages off the books, following similar action taken with Marcus Rashford.
There should not be any concerns about United’s ability to get the deal done as long as the fee stays within the £60-70 million range and RB Leipzig do not set an excessive asking price.
