Rafa Benitez has allegedly made his demands to the hierarchy at Newcastle United, as negotiations for a new contract for the manager continue.

Benitez is about to enter the final year of his current deal at St James’ Park and, according to the Mirror, the Spaniard wants written guarantees about the transfer budget in order to extend that.

The 58-year-old thinks he has had promises broken concerning the signing of new players over the past year and will not put pen to paper until that is changed.

Apparently Benitez wants £70m to spend over the next three transfer windows and then the former Chelsea and Liverpool boss will consider staying on with the Magpies.

How steep are those demands?

When Newcastle dropped down in the Championship in 2016, owner Mike Ashley afforded Benitez plenty of funds to try and get them to bounce straight back – although that did coincide with plenty of incoming fees for the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko.

However, over the past three windows the amount spent has dropped to £43.8m – as outlined by the Chronicle – which means Ashley needs to sanction more than a third as much again in order to appease his Champions League-winning manager.
