Newcastle’s fine run of from was abruptly ended on Saturday by Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has urged the club’s fans to stick with the team whatever happens, as quoted by the Chronicle.

The Newcastle fans seem to be a rather reactionary bunch, and when things don’t go as well as can be expected, they certainly are not shy in letting their feelings be known.

Benitez spoke to the Chronicle and discussed the importance of the fans sticking with his players, irrelevant of performances or results:

“We need the team with the right mentality, the fans with the right mentality – supporting the team with us – and at the end it will be good and we can celebrate together. But it is the time to realise that this won’t be a parade to the title.”

Tonight’s game is an ideal opportunity for the North East outfit to bounce back immediately from their disappointment at the weekend, and whilst it is not a league game, the outcome could certainly have a bearing on the player’s mentality for the next few games.

Newcastle face a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday before hosting promotion rivals Norwich City the following Wednesday, and those two games have the potential to be vitally important come the end of the season.

The atmosphere at St James’ Park will always be governed by the perceived attitude of the players on the football pitch, and as long as Benitez’ men give 100 per cent in very game, they will have the full support of the Toon Army.
