Magpies boss Rafa Benitez spoke to reporters following his side’s bitterly disappointing 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday yesterday, and shared the message he gave his players during his post-match team talk, as quoted by the Chronicle.
Newcastle now sit in second position in the Championship table, two points behind league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion, with just five games remaining in the season.
The are, however, still in a very strong position form which to gain promotion back to the Premier League, with 10 points separating themselves and third placed Huddersfield Town.
But Benitez does not want his side to rest on their laurels, outlining how disappointed he was with yesterday’s defeat to the Owls, as quoted by the Chronicle:

“What we have to do is be sure that we wake up – and that we are ready for the next game. We have five games to play, we are in a good position and I told the players that I was disappointed.”
Next up on the agenda for the Tyneside outfit is a tricky looking game at home to Leeds United on good Friday, and a victory would all but secure their spot inside the automatic promotion spots.
But after yesterday’s lackadaisical display, the Newcastle players will have to dramatically improve their performance levels if they are to take all three points from Garry Monk’s stubborn side.
