There have been wholesale changes at Newcastle since Benitez took charge of the Championship club.

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has stated that he is happy the relationship between himself and the club’s managing director Lee Charnley, speaking to the Shields Gazette.

Charnley has never been a popular figure on Tyneside with supporters, with many questioning his decision making process, but Benitez has had good things to say about the managing director.

“I am happy with it [his relationship with Charnley],” Benitez told the Shields Gazette.

“There are a lot of good people here.”

Ever since Mike Ashley took over the club, there has been a fragmented relationship between the fans and the board, with countless protests against the businessman’s ownership of the Magpies.

Charnley had previously acted as the club secretary, but took over as managing director in 2014 after Derek Llambias left the post in June the previous year.

As managing director, Charnley had been entrusted with Newcastle’s recruitment, working alongside Graham Carr, but many fans were disappointed and angry with their efforts, often signing unproven and cheaper talent, rather than forking out big money for Premier League proven players.

Since the arrival of Benitez, the Spaniard has had total control over transfers, and the Magpies have seen a total change in their recruitment policy, signing players that are fit for purpose and have the experience needed to help Newcastle get out of the Championship.

The change in transfer policy has seen pressure lifted off Charnley and owner Ashley, with fans now happier to support the club as long as Benitez is calling all of the shots.
