Newcastle United face Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow night in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez made a strange analogy in relation to his side’s current standing within the game, as quoted by the Chronicle.
The Magpies were humbled at home to Wolves in the Championship on Saturday losing 2-0 and, in turn, dropped outside of the automatic promotion spots.
Benitez discussed Newcastle’s current position within the game, ahead of tomorrow’s EFL Cup tie, and used a baffling metaphor to describe how some teams are more comfortable than others in certain situations, as quoted by the Chronicle:

“Sometimes you prefer to be the tail of the lion than the head of the mouse. It’s a Spanish expression. So, when you are in the Premier League and you are at the bottom, you are the tail of the lion, and some people are happy with that. But some people prefer to be the head of the mouse, so you are at the top and strong enough. So what we want to do is be sure we are strong enough, and manage the games.”
The analogy used by Benitez is as quirky as it is hard to follow, as he added weight to the notion that he is a media person’s dream.

One thing is for sure, they were taught a footballing lesson by Walter Zenga’s Wolves side on Saturday, and vast improvements will need to be made on the pitch if they are to reverse that result tomorrow night.
Newcastle fans will be hoping that Benitez leaves the metaphors at the press-conferences, and doesn’t bring them to the changing room for his pre-match motivational speech!
The game at St James’ Park kicks-off tomorrow night at 19:45.
