Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin in January.

The Toffees hitman is linked with a move to Newcastle as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his striking options [The Telegraph].

And going by Rafael Benitez’s comments on Friday, a move may still happen.

The Everton boss did not comment on the speculation regarding the England international, who cost the Goodison Park side £1.5 million five years ago.

But with Calvert-Lewin injured right now, it put a move away from Merseyside in January.

However, Benitez, who spent two-and-a-bit years as Newcastle boss, has claimed that the 24-year-old will be fit again well before the transfer window opens.

He told The Echo: “Dominic, at least two or three weeks we have to wait. He’s progressing well but we still need some time.”

Boost

This is good news for Newcastle’s chances.

If the Magpies are genuinely interested in Calvert-Lewin, they need him fit before the January window.

And according to Benitez’s estimate, that’ll almost certainly be the case.

The former Sheffield United hitman has only managed three Premier League games this season, netting twice.

But if he hits form upon this return from injury, particularly over the Christmas period, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see speculation get ramped up.
