Speaking to reporters after Newcastle’s 2-0 victory over Wolves in the EFL Cup third round, Magpies boss Rafa Benitez shared what he believes will be the key to his side’s success this term, as quoted by the club’s official website.

Newcastle responded from their loss to the Midlanders on Saturday in the perfect fashion, as Benitez rotated his starting XI, in a move that eventually paid dividends.

And it is that kind of strong competition for places that Benitez feels will hold Newcastle in good stead, as they prepare for the long slog ahead of them in the Championship, as quoted by nufc.co.uk:

“It’s important for us and for the players also, to feel that the competition has to be good for everyone. So they have to go out on the pitch and try to do their best, it doesn’t matter the competition, it doesn’t matter the game, and it doesn’t matter the position. That is a key factor if we want to be strong and to manage the number of games we will play this year.”

The North-East giants brought in 12 players over the course of the summer, and on paper, have arguably the strongest squad in the division.

The Spaniard is quite rightly attempting to utilise all of the players that he has at his disposal, and there is no better time to ring the changes than after a disappointing loss.

Benitez takes his side to Villa Park on Saturday to take on another of last term’s relegated Premier League side’s Aston Villa, in a game where the outcome will hold huge significance for both sides.

A win could take the Magpies back into the automatic promotion spots, and Benitez will likely rotate his side once again as he looks to keep his players as fresh as possible for the rest of the season.
