Benfica’s Lubomir Fejsa is a proven winner but is he good enough for Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to make Benfica midfielder Lubomir Fejsa their first signing of the summer transfer window.

On paper, Lubomir Fejsa would be a welcome addition to Tottenham Hotspur’s squad.

Spurs are in danger of being burdened with that ‘nearly-men’ tag, the attractive, free-flowing neutrals favourites who win plenty of friends but few trophies. Despite boasting arguably the greatest squad in the club’s history, Tottenham haven’t felt the cold sheen of silverware since lifting the 2008 League Cup.

Serbian international Fejsa, then, could add that much-needed killer instinct in a side who finished third and second in the last two Premier League campaigns.

He has won the league title in each of his last nine seasons at club level, three at Partizan Belgrade, two at Olympiakos and four straight league crowns at Portuguese giants Benfica.

Furthermore, Fejsa has plenty of European experience under his belt too, featuring regularly in the Champions League for Benfica since joining in 2013/14. Tottenham fell at the first hurdle in the continent’s premiere club competition last season before being knocked out of the Europa League by Gent.

Therefore, Fejsa’s know-how could come in handy in a squad high on quality but low on top level European experience.

In many other ways, however, the deal raises questions. The Sun claims that Tottenham are hoping to make Fejsa, who is out of contract next summer, their first major signing of the transfer window.

Yet, despite his penchant for success, he is far from the archetypal Tottenham signing. He’s 28 for a start, potentially making him the second oldest Spurs signing since Mauricio Pochettino took over three years ago, behind only former Swansea City goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

Furthermore, Spurs are hardly short of options in central midfield with Moussa Dembele and Victor Wanyama forming a fearsome partnership last season. And, with Tottenham refusing to sell Eric Dier to Manchester United, you wonder how big a role Fejsa could play.

He’s a prolific tackler and an accurate passer but is Fejsa really an upgrade on any of the players currently at Spurs’ disposal?
