Benfica have reportedly rejected a €100m (£88m) transfer offer from an unnamed club for Enzo Fernandez, with Liverpool being heavily linked with the Argentine midfielder in recent weeks.

According to Record, the Portuguese giants have rejected the second-highest transfer offer they have ever received for a player for Enzo Fernandez, with Benfica demanding €120m (£105m) for their new superstar talent following a sensational showing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

The midfielder was named Young Player of the Tournament as Argentina won their third-ever World Cup, with interest now at an all-time high for Fernandez despite only signing for Benfica this year in the summer transfer window.

Whilst Record state that the identity of the club who made the transfer offer for Fernandez is unknown, there is a good chance that Liverpool are the ones who made the bid, with Bola Na Rede recently reporting that the Reds already have an agreement in place with the 21-year-old’s agent.

Indeed, Fernandez is expected to be one of the most in-demand players next month when the January transfer window opens for business, yet given Liverpool’s midfield issues, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Reds were the lucky club to win the race for the youngster.

Midfield is a position the Merseyside club are eager to improve on in January, and given Fernandez’s incredible reputation after Qatar as well as his profile, it would make sense if Liverpool came in with an offer that would match Benfica’s demands for their star prospect.

As mentioned, Benfica have set a £105m asking price for Fernandez for the January transfer window, and whilst this fee would shatter any and all records Liverpool have set in the market in recent years, the risk could be worth it given just how good the midfielder is.

Fernandez was a key reason behind Argentina’s success in the Middle East this winter, and given Liverpool’s problems in the midfield, the South American could be the key to Merseyside club having the centre of their starting XI finally sorted out.
