Newcastle United missed out on Greek ace Andreas Samaris.

Benfica's midfielder Andreas Samaris during the Portuguese League football match Sporting CP vs SL Benfica at Alvalade stadium in Lisbon, Portugal on February 3, 2019.

Benfica claimed a huge win over their local rivals Sporting on Sunday, hammering them 4-2 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The two clubs are separated by less than three kilometres, providing European football with one of its great, famous derbies.

Benfica sat five points clear of Sporting heading into the game, with Sporting enduring a disappointing season after such a tumultuous summer.

Sunday’s clash proved to be a superb affair, with Benfica racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Haris Seferovic and Joao Felix, before Bruno Fernandes pulled one back for Sporting.

However, Ruben Dias and Pizzi put Benfica 4-1 up, and a Bas Dost penalty on 89 minutes was nothing more than a consolation for Sporting, even with Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos being sent off.

It was a superb night for Benfica, but fans took to Twitter to blast the performance of midfielder Andreas Samaris despite the victory.

Just days ago, Samaris was expected to sign for Newcastle, but The Chronicle reported that the move fell apart, and he was left to stay with Benfica and immediately start against Sporting.

Fans weren’t impressed though, suggesting that Samaris is a ‘donkey’ and should have been out in favour of Gedson Fernandes, with others claiming that it’s time to let the Greek international leave and that Benfica can do without him – suggesting that Newcastle either dodged a bullet, or could have a shot at signing him over the summer.
