Tom Huddlestone has told the Football Show on Sky Sports (13/10/20 at 10:20 am) that Harry Kane will be ‘disappointed’ that he’s not been able to play for England recently despite Tottenham worries.

The former Spurs midfielder also claimed that, even if a player isn’t 100% fit to play, they will ‘bend the truth’ to get out on that pitch and he feels Kane will be doing the same even though Tottenham fans don’t want to see him starting given their worries about his injury situation.

A lot has been made of the seemingly growing club v country row, with the Guardian claiming that Jose Mourinho is disappointed that Kane might start against Denmark tonight despite Spurs feeling he is not 100% fit.

Tottenham fans may not like to hear it, but Huddlestone, who played with Kane at Spurs, feels the England captain will be ‘disappointed’ that he’s not played more games recently rather than those concerns that he’s being overworked.

“If you are feeling a bit of fatigue or slight injury,” Huddlestone told Sky Sports. “You just get on with it [especially at my age]. If you waited till you felt 100% then you would probably never get out there.

“Knowing Harry Kane, he will be exactly the same. He is built of tough stuff. Almost quite old school in that approach. He will want to be playing.

“You will say he has started eight out of 11 games, he would be a bit disappointed that he hasn’t started all 11, to be fair knowing him and how much he loves scoring goals.

“For him, on a personal level, he will be looking at that Wayne Rooney England record and thinking ‘I have missed two games here, I could have got two or three goals’. I think every player bends the truth in wanting to get out there.”

At the end of the day, all of this comes down to what happens during these next few weeks with Kane and whether or not he picks up a knock of any kind.

If he finds himself sidelined for a few weeks or more than those at St George’s Park can bet that a certain Jose Mourinho will make sure they hear about it.

But, of course, both parties will have their own priorities, so there isn’t anything new with this situation, it’s not the first and it certainly won’t be the last.
