Liverpool may well be in the market for a new centre back in the January transfer window, given their recent injury crisis.
Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk have both suffered knee injuries, meaning they will miss months of the season and leave Liverpool exposed at the back.
Fans want to see a big signing such as Dayot Upamecano, but the Reds are eyeing a centre back who would very much be one for the future.
The Athletic reported in October that Liverpool want to sign Grimsby Town talent Ben Grist, as well as teammate Louis Boyd.
Chelsea are in the race too, with Grist around the Grimsby first-team already despite being just 15 years of age.
Liverpool may look to snap him up and develop him for the future, placing a focus on youth recruitment just as they did when signing Harvey Elliott.

Now, Grimsby boss Ian Holloway has branded Grist a ‘wonderful centre half’ when speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, naming the teenager as one of his top defensive options.
Grist can also play in midfield, but Holloway seemingly views him as a centre back – and that should be very interesting for Liverpool as they look to add defensive options both for now and for the future.
