Everton new boy Ben Godfrey has told the Daily Mail that Tom Davies played a key role in his move to Goodison Park earlier this month.

The Toffees wanted a new centre back, especially with Mason Holgate out injured, and were linked with a host of different options.

In the end, Everton landed Godfrey from Norwich City, paying around £25million to lure him away from Carrow Road before the transfer deadline.

Godfrey made his first Everton start on Sunday, but he was forced into an unfamiliar right back role with Seamus Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny unavailable.

Godfrey looked a little uncomfortable in that role, but should be a real talent for Carlo Ancelotti to develop at centre back having already helped Holgate.

The defender already knew one Everton player having featured in the England Under-21’s with Tom Davies, and he played an important role in the move.

Godfrey admits that Davies made him aware of how easy it would be to settle in at Everton, and he knew how much Davies enjoys his football at Goodison Park.

He added that he knew Everton was the right club for him very quickly, and now believes he can develop alongside Davies on Merseyside.

“As soon as I heard the whispers about Everton, that was it for me,” said Godfrey. “I got the vibe that Tom really enjoys his football here. It’s a tight-knit bunch and he made me aware it would be easy to settle in.”

“To hear that from someone at the club says a lot. He’s another young footballer who is learning and it told me this was the right environment for me,” he added.
