Ben Godfrey was pressed into action in an unfamiliar right back role against Liverpool on Saturday.

As per Everton’s official website, he had only played there twice before, with the weekend’s appearance making it three times now.

But the £25 million (BBC) deadline day signing says he’s happy to play there, if it can help the team.

He said the role didn’t come naturally, but he was talked through the game by his team-mates and will learn under Carlo Ancelotti if he puts him there again.

“Right-back is a bit different but I am ready to play in any position. It was not always natural in that position but the senior boys talked me through the game.

“Getting forward is a bit different for me. I’ve not played right-back very often but I wanted to do my best.

“Mr Ancelotti is a great manager and it is incredible to have the opportunity to work under him. I have always said I am like a sponge, and I will soak up every bit of information I can.”

Godfrey was likely brought to Goodison Park to ease the burden in the centre of their defence, so playing at right back probably isn’t how he saw his first couple of weeks going.

Godfrey clearly has a great attitude is ready to slot in wherever he can to keep Everton’s good run going.

That is an area where opponents would likely seek to get joy if it’s a long-term fix.

That could be targeting Godfrey out wide or leaving him unattended on the ball after his admission getting forward isn’t his forte.

But he is a hugely talented young player with time to improve, and the experience of playing across the back four can help him in the long-run.
