Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has told The Irish Examiner that he thinks Matt Doherty has been ‘excellent’ since arriving at the club.
Spurs swooped to land Doherty in August, as they raided Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth a surprisingly low fee of just £13.4million.
The Irishman was a key player in Wolves’ first two seasons back in the Premier League, impressing in the final third with 15 goals and 15 assists in all competitions over the last two campaigns.
Doherty is adjusting to playing as a right back rather than as a wing back, and will be hoping to kick on at Spurs after the international break having been left out in favour of Serge Aurier against Manchester United.
The international break hasn’t been particularly kind on Doherty though. He played in Ireland’s 0-0 draw against Slovakia on Thursday night, which ended in heartbreak.
Ireland lost on penalties to Slovakia, meaning they can no longer qualify for the European Championships – and Doherty missed the crucial penalty, hitting the crossbar from 12 yards.

Now, Doherty will play against Wales and Davies today, with the Spurs left back admitting that he hasn’t actually spoken to Doherty since his penalty miss, believing that it’s a situation that is just better left alone.
Davies did though offer huge praise to Doherty, suggesting that he has been ‘excellent’ ever since Jose Mourinho brought him to the club.
“I haven’t spoken to him since the penalty,” said Davies. “Sometimes things are better left. But I get on really well with him. Since he’s come to Spurs he’s been excellent. We spoke about the game last week and it will be a good competitive match against them,” he added.
