Ben Davies says Tottenham man is in the best shape of his career, ‘he’s a top player’

Ben Davies has been quoted by Football London as saying that Tottenham striker Harry Kane is in the best shape of his career under Antonio Conte, and is hopeful that the England skipper can have another successful season at Spurs.

Kane, 29, opened his account for the 2022-23 campaign with an injury-time equaliser for Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. In a hotly-contested affair, Kane had the last laugh – before the two managers confronted one another.

Despite failing to score against Southampton, Kane has put his past August demons behind him to score this early. Not only that, but Kane has equalled Sergio Aguero’s 184 Premier League goals – putting him joint fourth.

Only Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer remain – with third-placed Cole on 187 goals. Davies believes the striker is in the best shape he has ever been in, and spoke about the “hard yards” Kane puts in on the training ground.

“I think he’s looking as good as he ever has. He’s a top player. He’s shown time and time again the class that he’s got and he’s off the mark again. Let’s hope he can have a successful season,” Davies said.

“I think Harry is not just a top, top player, he’s a top professional as well. He’s one of the first in, he’s always willing to do the hard yards and it’s no surprise he’s got to the top.”

How close can Kane get to Shearer’s record this season? Well, now on 184, he will be disappointed if he does not take his tally north of 200 this season. That would see him eclipse Cole’s 187, and take him very close to Rooney’s 208.

Considering we are talking about a striker that only turned 29 in July, it is quite incredible. Kane has easily got another six or seven years at this level and if he continues to keep himself fit and in good shape, he easily surpasses Shearer.

But target Rooney’s 208 this season is a good barometer. That would see him tally up a huge 25 goals for the 2022-23 season in the league. Anything above 20 would also be a wonderful achievement for the Spurs academy graduate.
