Ben Davies has struggled to break into Tottenham Hotspur’s team ahead of Danny Rose.
Ben Davies has told the Hampstead and Highgate newspaper that he believes he could play as a centre-back in Tottenham Hotspur’s three-man defence.
Spurs have switched to a 3-4-3 formation in recent weeks, and the tactical change has made a big impact.
Tottenham have been in wonderful form over their last few matches, and they have climbed into third place in the Premier League table.
For Davies, breaking into the first-team looks to be a tough ask, as Danny Rose has been a revelation at left wing back.
Rose’s natural attacking instincts are allowed to flourish in a role where he is allowed to get forward more regularly, and Davies has found his opportunities to start limited.
Davies did score for Tottenham against Aston Villa in the FA Cup last weekend, but he is expected to be dropped back to the substitutes’ bench when Mauricio Pochettino’s side take on West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.
But Davies believes there is hope that he could prove to be an option at centre-back in a three-man defence, as he has played there for Wales when on international duty.
“It’s hard work out there [as a wing-back] but it’s part of football,” Davies said. “If you’re asked to play in any role that’s what you have to do. Three at the back could be here to stay but it’s up to the manager at the end of the day.
“I like to think I could play in that role [as a centre-back] as well. They’re nice options for the manager to have, to have quite a few of us who can play in different positions. But we haven’t discussed anything like that at all.”
