Liverpool fans may have already forgotten about Ben Davies, but he hasn’t forgotten about a potential career with the Reds.

With Liverpool facing a defensive crisis in January of this year, the Reds pounced to sign Davies from Preston North End.

Inside the final six months of his contract, Davies was available for a bargain price.

Maybe Liverpool thought Davies was a bargain signing they could end up flogging for a profit. After all, they didn’t exactly have a role for him at Anfield.

Davies left on loan for Sheffield United over the summer, leaving Anfield without making a single competitive appearance.

With Ibrahima Konate now on board, it’s hard to see Liverpool having plans for him moving forward.

Still, it sounds like Davies still hopes for a future at Anfield.

Yorkshire Live’s Nathan Hemmingham has spoken to the Liverpool Echo about Davies, admitting that he spoke to the defender recently.

Hemmingham claims Davies still hopes to go back to Liverpool next summer and impress Jurgen Klopp, earning a Liverpool future.

“I spoke to Ben recently,” said Hemmingham. “He said first and foremost he’s not thinking about anything major; it’s just about this season and playing again – and playing to the best of his ability and trying to get back to the player he was at Preston when Liverpool came in for him.”

“Then in the summer he wants to go back to Liverpool to see if the door is open, because you don’t know what happens. He wants to have a good pre-season with Liverpool, see where the land lies, and see if he can try and impress the manager, Jurgen Klopp.”

“But if Liverpool are happy to let him leave permanently, I’m sure, providing he impresses and become the player everyone who has tracked him these past 12 months have been convinced he is, Sheffield United will be looking at that,” he added.

In truth, it’s hard to see there being a role for Davies at Liverpool. Konate is on board, and it doesn’t look like Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are leaving any time soon.

Exceptional at Preston but maybe not quite at Liverpool’s standards, Davies may end up having to leave Liverpool permanently in 2022.
