Ben Davies is not as good as Tottenham teammate Danny Rose whatever Pochettino would have us believe

The Tottenham Hotspur left-back is not good enough to be keeping Rose out of the starting XI.

Despite impressing for Tottenham Hotspur against Borussia Dortmund last week, left-back Danny Rose was omitted from their Premier League squad for the second successive match, this time against West Bromwich Albion.

However Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is kidding no one if he thinks Ben Davies is a better option than the England international.

Explaining that Rose was overlooked simply due to team selection rather than any fresh injury, Pochettino has laid down a marker for a player who has plenty of critics since that ill-judged interview during his prolonged layoff.

But Tottenham are suffering as a consequence, with Davies nowhere near the player Rose can be on his day, and one wonders if the Spurs boss would be better off selecting the latter as long as he has him.

It is one thing dropping a player because you have better options, and quite another when you are doing so simply to make a point that does not need making.

Rose may or may not be in North London next season, but for now he is one of their best players and he will want to perform in a World Cup year.

Davies is a fine backup option, but he is no Rose, and Tottenham could be faltering just when they should be keeping pace with the Manchester clubs at the top of the table.
