Ben Davies has told Tottenham Hotspur’s website that Son Heung-min has not got the “rub of the green” this season but the South Korea skipper does not have anything to prove – having been dropped on Sunday against West Ham.

Son, 30, came off the bench to score Tottenham’s second goal in a 2-0 win over the Hammers. But it comes after being axed from the starting line-up – amid a poor run of form, compared to last term. He netted 23 League goals in 21-22.

This season, Son has just four league goals – and eight in all competitions. But it will have pleased Tottenham to see Son back among the goals on the weekend, hopefully a kickstart for the ex-Bayer Leverkusen attacker, which is needed.

Davies commented on Son’s struggling form this season. He believes Son is the kind of player that does not need to prove anything to anyone – having done so well in the past. But Davies also believes Son has been unlucky this season.

“Sonny is a player that doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. Time after time, he’s done it. He’s got 98 Premier League goals now and you don’t get that without being a top player,” Davies told Tottenham’s website about Son.

“The more we can get him in the right positions, he can show how clinical he is. He hasn’t scored many but that’s what you get when you set standards so high. You don’t always get the rub of the green. Everyone is delighted for him.”

We have said it a number of times – but could his latest be the goal that kickstarts Son’s season? If Spurs are to stand any chance of beating Newcastle and the improving Liverpool to a place in the top four – they need Son in good form.

His eighth goal of the season in all competitions will have certainly raised his confidence. But ahead of a defining run of fixtures – Chelsea this weekend, Sheffield United in the FA Cup and the second leg against Milan – Spurs need Son.
