Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino was forced to pick Ben Davies in central defence in his side’s last match.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has told the London Evening Standard that playing at centre-back in a four-man defence is something which has never happened to him before.

Tottenham were so short of defensive options against Burnley at the weekend that Davies was forced to play alongside Toby Alderweireld in the heart of Spurs’ defence.

The left-back was in a totally unfamiliar position but he still helped Spurs pick up a clean-sheet and the three points against Burnley.

And he said: “[Burnley] was the first competitive game I’ve started at proper centre-half [in a four-man defence] in my career, so it was an adjustment but I enjoyed it.

“It’s down to the manager if I do it regularly, but he had full confidence in me playing there and that does a lot for your mindset going into games.”

Tottenham left it late to beat Burnley, with Christian Eriksen slamming home the winner in injury time.

The basis of their victory was built upon the strength of their defence though, with Spurs’ makeshift backline giving up very few chances.

Whether Davies will be kept as a centre-back in midweek remains to be seen.

Tottenham face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup tomorrow, and Mauricio Pochettino’s options in defence are still limited, with Eric Dier now set to be out until the new year.
