Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic will miss out on Liverpool central defender Ben Davies to Sheffield United, according to Sky Sports.

What’s the story?

Sky Sports are reporting today that Liverpool have decided to send Davies to Championship club United.

A season-long loan deal has been agreed this morning, and the move will be completed early next week.

Blades manager Slavisa Jokanovic wants to sign the former Preston North End player to fill the left-sided centre-half spot.

The Yorkshire club are aiming to clinch promotion back to the Premier League after getting relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.

Celtic to miss out

This latest development will be a blow for Celtic, who have also been linked with Davies.

Goal reported earlier this month that the Scottish giants are monitoring the 26-year-old English centre-back.

We covered the report here on HITC Sport.

The Daily Mail reported last month that the Hoops want to sign the defender on loan from Liverpool this summer.

Sensible move?

Now, of course Celtic are a massive club, but the Scottish Premiership is not at the level of the Premier League or the Championship in England.

Davies knows the Championship inside out and has been a success in the division, and it makes sense that he is going back to the second tier of English football.

Moreover, Celtic have already made defensive signings this summer.

Osaze Urhoghide, who can play as a right-back or as a centre-back, has joined the Hoops, and so has Carl Starfelt.

However, both Urhoghide and Starfelt moved to Celtic in July, and, as you can see above, the Hoops are/were still interested in Davies this month.

So, it suggests that Celtic manager Postecoglou is still keen on the Liverpool defender, but he is now going to be disappointed.
