Former Premier League ace Paul Merson has questioned Everton supporters after the 4-0 win over West Ham.

Merson felt there was a lack of enthusiasm at Goodison Park during the victory over former boss David Moyes’ side, certainly in the early stages.

The pundit quizzed why fans were not buying into Sam Allardyce’s appointment.

Speaking to SkySports Soccer Special on (29/11), Merson said he was disappointed by the atmosphere at the game.

He said: “The atmosphere there weren’t great. Even at 4-0.

“I played there enough times and it [Goodison] was always rocking.”

He added in his SkySports column: “I don’t think the fans want him there – I didn’t hear anyone signing his name when they were 4-0 up. It was unusual.

The reason Merson believes Everton should be particularly enthused, is that appointing Sam Allardyce should automatically guarantee them survival and allow them to kick on.

Merson even believes Everton can go on and win a trophy this season.

He added: “They are not in a relegation fight. If your an Everton fan, go on and win the FA Cup, at least get a run.”

Everton’s win over West Ham lifts them up to 13th place, having previously occupied 16th in the table before the game.

This weekend the Toffees face Huddersfield at Goodison Park – and fans should consider Merson’s comments as a challenge to raise their game.
