Ghana beat Uganda 1-0 on Tuesday – but Aston Villa’s Jordan Ayew did not impress fans.
Ghana made a winning start to their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign as they beat Uganda 1-0 in Port-Gentil on Tuesday.
Avram Grant side had to wait until the penultimate game of the first round of fixtures to get their campaign underway, and they saw contenders like Ivory Coast and Algeria slip up with draws, though Senegal did beat Tunisia in Group B.
Aston Villa’s Jordan Ayew celebrates scoring
Ghana will have wanted to lay down a marker as they took on Uganda in Group D, and whilst they claimed all three points, it wasn’t the most convincing display from the Black Stars.
West Ham United ace Andre Ayew scored the only goal of the game, converting from the penalty spot after Asamoah Gyan had been brought down by Isaac Isinde in side the penalty area.
Aston Villa’s Jordan Ayew
Whilst one Ayew grabbed the headlines with the winning goal, another struggled as brother Jordan Ayew also started the game.
The Aston Villa forward played 85 minutes of the encounter Uganda, and manager Avram Grant told Citi FM Online that he felt Ayew had one of his best games for Ghana, but did drop his performance levels in the second half.
After Grant’s comments, Ghana fans took to Twitter in complete bemusement, suggesting that they are worried about their chances of winning the tournament if Grant genuinely believed that Ayew played well.
Some questioned whether Grant was even watching the same game, and suggested that Ayew shouldn’t be in the team for the next game, whilst others admitted it’s hard to defend the attacker anymore as he’s now 25 and should be performing for his country.
