Should West Bromwich Albion renew interest in Laurent Depoitre?

A year ago Laurent Depoitre was dreaming big. An impressive season for Gent saw a clamour of interest in his services from clubs across Europe and he landed up signing for Porto.

It is safe to say his move has not worked out, with the Belgian striker scoring just one league goal and playing in only seven matches.

Depoitre now appears ready to give up on his spell in Portugal, quoted by Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad stating that he wants to move on, but does not wish to return to his homeland.

He said: “At some point you feel that you do not have the confidence of the coach.

I feel like I’ve lost all my credit there. You continue to work, but you realise that it is difficult until the end of the season.

“I prefer another opportunity abroad and want to grab it. We’ll see after the season, but Belgium is not my first choice.”

One club who should consider making a move is West Bromwich Albion, who spent time tracking Depoitre last season.

Club assistant Dave Kemp told the Birmingham Mail last season that Depoitre was on the club’s radar, with the club attempting to lure him to the Hawthorns.

Now they have a second chance to sign a striker who could provide very useful competition to Salomon Rondon.

Depoitre was capped by Belgium last year and scored on his one and only appearance, after a campaign in which he netted 15 goals for his club.
