Belgian commentator admits imminent Leeds deal for Laurens De Bock is a massive surprise, isn’t worth more than £3m

Leeds United are poised to sign Club Brugge defender Laurens De Bock.

Belgian football pundit and commentator Peter Vandenbempt has told BBC Radio Leeds that Laurens De Bock’s move to Leeds United is a ‘big surprise’.

The Whites have already made two January additions, landing Aapo Halme and Yosuke Ideguchi, though the latter has been sent out on loan to Spanish feeder club Cultural Leonesa for the rest of the season.

With Halme one for the future too, Leeds have now focused their attention on adding a player to immediately aid Thomas Christiansen’s side.

Christiansen has been lacking a real left back since Charlie Taylor’s summer move to Burnley, given that Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has been out of favour, and right back Gaetano Berardi has been pressed into action on the left.

Speculation in recent days has suggested that Club Brugge left back Laurens De Bock has emerged as a top target for Leeds, and that deal now appears to be on the verge of completion.

Sky Sports report that De Bock has undergone a medical with Leeds, and is poised to complete a move to Elland Road in the near future having fallen out of favour under Ivan Leko this season.

The 25-year-old has turned out for Club Brugge more than 170 times since his 2013 move from Lokeren, and has won one league title and one Belgian cup during his time with the club.

Now, Belgian football pundit and commentator Peter Vandenbempt has told BBC Radio Leeds that the move is a ‘big surprise’ in Belgium, as he hasn’t enjoyed the best season to date and is somewhat impulsive, claiming that he wouldn’t be worth a fee north of £3million.

“Let’s first say that, in Belgium, we see it as a big surprise that he will go over the channel and play for Leeds United, because he hasn’t had the best of seasons so far, but apart from that, he’s a very versatile left-back or left-wing player. Technically, he’s not the best of all players, but he’s got a strong character, he’s physically strong, he can go up and down, and is rather hard in the duels, he’s got a fierce tackle and from time to time, he’s rather impulsive.”

“I’d say if you pay more than £3million, it would be too much in my opinion, but I know that in England, transfer fees are a bit different from what we’re used to in Belgium. I don’t know what the price is, but it can’t be all that expensive,” he added.
