Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport that he is surprised that Ben Davies is going to Liverpool and not to Celtic.

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool will sign Davies from Preston North End on transfer deadline day.

The report has claimed that the defending Premier League champions will pay Preston an initial transfer fee of £500,000.

It has been further added that Celtic thought that they were close to signing the 25-year-old central defender on a pre-contract and were also ready to take him to Celtic Park now.

Former Preston and Liverpool defender Lawrenson has admitted that he did not think that Davies is good enough for Liverpool.

Lawrenson told BBC Sport: “Ben Davies has done well at Preston and has let his contract run down so he was going to move on in the summer.

“If he’d gone to Celtic, which I’d heard had been agreed, then I was thinking he could do well there, but being honest I didn’t really see him as being good enough to be on Liverpool’s radar.

“He’s a real steady Eddie. He’s left-footed and quick enough but he’s not got phenomenal pace or anything like that.”

Adding cover

Davies, who can also play as a left-back, is a good defender and has been a success in the Championship.

The Englishman will add cover, and for the reported initial transfer fee of £500,000, he would be a good signing for Liverpool.

The Reds have been severely affected by injury problems at the back, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term concerns and Joel Matip and Fabinho also missing at times.
