Newcastle United’s club-record signing Joelinton has not had the best of debut campaigns. The Brazilian came in for £40 million (BBC) but has scored just two goals in the Premier League.
Dwight Gayle, despite his decent recent form, isn’t the long-term answer for the Magpies. They will need to look at the transfer market for a quality striker this summer and, if reports are to believed, they have a target in mind.
The Express claims that Newcastle will make a move for Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson this summer, provided that the Cherries get relegated on the final day of the season.
It has been reported that Steve Bruce has watched a lot of Wilson in recent months and feels that he would be a very good addition to Newcastle’s attack next season.
The Magpies boss is hoping to secure a £20 million deal for the Cherries forward who has scored nine goals in the Premier League despite Bournemouth’s struggles.
The Englishman scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in the league last season, which caught the attention of a number of top clubs.
However, concerns over his fitness made clubs pull out of a deal. But a whole campaign without an injury shows that it shouldn’t be a worry any longer.
Sam Allardyce is a big fan of Wilson
Former Magpies boss Sam Allardyce, like Bruce, is a huge fan of Wilson. The experienced Englishman heaped praise on the striker for his performances last season on Goals on Sunday on Sky Sports (20/01/2019 at 11:55 am).

Allardyce said: “He (Wilson) has been class for a long, long time. It’s two cruciates and people look at that and say do we spend that amount of money on somebody that has had a couple of (injuries to) cruciate ligaments.
“As a goal-scorer, he is proven. On the other side of that, his work rate and his hold up play is really good as well.”
In a confident team, Wilson is more than capable of scoring goals regularly. The 28-year-old is far more reliable in front of goal than Gayle and Joelinton, which makes him a really good option for Newcastle United this summer.
£20 million for Wilson is a fair figure. However, if Bournemouth do go down, Newcastle could try to bring that fee even lower which would be a fantastic piece of business.
