Sam Byram says beating Tottenham last season was his favourite memory as a West Ham player.
Sam Byram’s West Ham career got off to an excellent start when he signed in 2016, after he was thrust straight into action against Manchester City.
The full-back immediately looked like a smart buy after joining from Leeds United, but his debut in 2-2 draw with City is not his fondest memory.
He said: “It killed their title hopes. They were chasing Chelsea and you could feel the pressure they were under to get a win.
“Winning that game guaranteed our safety, so it was a big result, and to do it against a team that was doing so well, I can remember the feeling in the dressing room after, which is why I think this is the best West Ham match I’ve played in.”
Byram added that he enjoyed his battle with Spurs ace Heung-Min Son, even if he was booked trying to keep up with the South Korean.
He said: “I was up against Son and he’s a big tricky. He nutmegged me at one point and I ripped his shirt, but we got the clean sheet in the end.”
West Ham won the game 1-0 through a goal from Manuel Lanzini, but last month the same winning feeling was not present at the London Stadium when the two teams met.
Spurs raced into a 3-0 lead and while West Ham nearly fought back to claim a draw, Tottenham left the ground toasting a 3-2 victory.
Byram has had to look back to last season for a ‘favourite game’, because this campaign he has barely featured.
The 24-year-old has been overlooked by Slaven Bilic all season, and when Spurs beat West Ham 3-2 in their recent meeting, Byram was an unused substitute.
